By How artificial intelligence tools can support journalistic work, where their limitations lie, what OSINT is and how it differs from a standard internet search, as well as why the responsible use of new technologies matters and how newsrooms can develop internal guidelines for their use, were among the topics covered during the two-day training course “Artificial Intelligence, OSINT and the Responsible Use of New Technologies in Journalism”.
The training, held in Podgorica on 18 and 19 July 2026, brought together 13 journalists and was led by Milorad Ivanović, Tanja Maksić and Miloš Katić.
The training provided participants with an opportunity to learn about practical examples of AI use in newsrooms, the basic principles of writing effective prompts, and the use of AI tools for transcription, translation, audio processing and podcast production. Participants were also introduced to tools for video production and editing, the creation of short-form videos and the adaptation of content for social media platforms.
A separate session focused on mapping online identities and digital footprints, including techniques for following digital traces from a single identifier to other relevant information.
The second day of the training addressed the development of internal newsroom guidelines for the use of AI, the ethical issues surrounding the use of AI in journalism and responsibility for content created with the assistance of AI tools. Participants also discussed the importance of transparency towards audiences and clearly disclosing when artificial intelligence has been used in the production of news and other content. They were also shown how newsrooms can develop internal rules for the responsible use of AI.
Participants showed particular interest in the practical sessions, during which the topics covered in the theoretical part of the training were explored through presentations, tool demonstrations, case studies and discussions.
The training was organised as part of the project “Key Challenges: Improving Journalists’ Safety, Labour Rights and Resilience in the Western Balkans”.
The Training of Trainers programme is led by the Fojo Media Institute in close cooperation with its regional partners: the Trade Union of Media of Montenegro (TUMM), the Association of Independent Electronic Media of Kosovo (AMPEK), the Independent Journalists’ Association of Serbia (IJAS), the Independent Trade Union of Journalists and Media Workers of Macedonia (SSNM), and the Centre for Investigative Reporting in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
