By The Trade Union of Media of Montenegro strongly condemns the behavior of Montenegrin President Jakov Milatović towards journalist Aleksandra Jovančević from Television of Montenegro during today’s press conference for his list participating in the local elections in Podgorica.
Public officials and politicians are elected, among other reasons, to be accountable to the public and citizens. While it is legitimate for them to dislike certain questions, they must respond to them rather than belittling the journalists who ask them or giving them moral lectures, which Milatović did today. Similar attempts to discredit journalists have occurred in the past, and this once again shows that, unfortunately, our officials still do not understand what press freedom is.
The Trade Union of Media of Montenegro urges President Milatović and all politicians to refrain from such verbal attacks on journalists, and calls on journalists to continue doing their job by asking all the questions they believe need to be asked.
