The Trade Union of Media of Montenegro (TUMM) is concerned about a threatening message sent to E Television journalist Itana Kaluđerović via her Facebook account.
Unfortunately, as we have repeatedly warned, online threats against media workers have become a daily occurrence, and journalists are no longer safe even within their private spheres, including social media accounts.
TUMM is particularly concerned about the nationalistic dimension of the incident, given that the threatening comment was posted under a photograph taken in Cetinje, where Kaluđerović is wearing a Montenegrin shirt. This context further incites hatred and polarization, posing a threat to social peace.
We call on the competent institutions to urgently identify and prosecute the person responsible for the threat, in order to send a clear message that the online space is not beyond the reach of the law, and that anonymity cannot be used as a cover for threats, hate speech, and violence.
This is the ninth incident recorded by TUMM in its database of attacks on journalists, and the fourth that occurred in the online sphere. Therefore, we also urge media professionals to report every incident, in order to create a realistic picture of the scale of the problem and to put pressure on institutions to act.
