By The Trade Union of Media of Montenegro (TUMM) welcomes the latest move by Supreme State Prosecutor Milorad Marković and the introduction of mandatory instructions to prosecutors in cases of attacks on journalists and media organizations.
We would like to remind you that, at a recent meeting with Marković, the TUMM emphasized the introduction of certain instructions for the work of prosecutors when it comes to cases involving threats to the safety of journalists, the aim of which is to intensify and unify their work. Such solutions have existed in the countries of the region for some time and have proven to be effective. It is commendable that cooperation with the Commission for Monitoring Investigations of Attacks on Journalists has been institutionalized in this way, which will greatly increase the effects of its work.
TUMM, as an organization whose focus has been on the safety of journalists almost since its foundation, commends the prosecution’s intention to improve communication with media organizations, which was announced to be resolved by appointing a contact person in the prosecution for TUMM and other organizations dealing with these questions. In this way, we believe that the transparency of the prosecution organization, which until now has often been questionable, will be significantly improved.
Since the beginning of the year, TUMM has registered as many as eight incidents in which the victims were journalists and other media workers.
