SafeJournalists: Unacceptable Attack on Woman Journalist in Montenegro

The SafeJournalists Network strongly condemns the attack on Dušanka Pejović, a journalist from the Public Broadcaster of Montenegro (RTCG), which took place on March 9th in Podgorica. We welcome the prompt response by the police and prosecution, and we expect the legal proceedings to swiftly result in a conviction.

Journalist Dušanka Pejović was verbally assaulted in front of her apartment by an unknown individual who directed a series of threats and insults at her. The police quickly arrested the attacker, who is now in custody. The ongoing investigation indicates that the attack was motivated by her work as a journalist.

The SafeJournalists Network emphasizes that attacks on journalists are unacceptable in any democratic society and must be met with prompt and effective institutional responses. We are particularly concerned about the growing vulnerability of women journalists in Montenegro. Out of 24 recorded cases of attacks and threats against journalists and media organizations, women journalists were the victims in 11 cases.

The SafeJournalists Network stands in full solidarity with our Montenegrin affiliate, the Trade Union of Media of Montenegro, and with all journalists in the country. We call on the authorities to ensure a swift and thorough implementation of legal protections for journalists and to foster a stronger culture of safety. Press freedom is a cornerstone of democracy, and such attacks must not be tolerated.

The SafeJournalists Network will inform both national and international stakeholders about these troubling developments.

Any attack on journalists is an attack on democracy, public interest, and fundamental human rights.
